About Belief As a Tool
How to empower your chaos magick practice
Problem
If you open almost any book on the practice of Chaos Magick, you will find that it is mainly based on belief: the stronger your belief in something, the higher the chance your magick will work out.
On the other hand, you will often encounter “Gods” in this literature that feel quite out of date, since we live in an era where science has won. It didn’t find the gods of old. Gods are dead. The objective worldview is the main paradigm right now, and it’s still going strong.
You go to school and they teach you math, physics, chemistry, etc. You go to university and you study them deeper. Your mind become fixated.
So what does this mean? Do we give up on magick? Or do we need to twist ourselves in knots trying to force a belief in old gods?
What if I told you there’s another way? Modern physics has become incredibly advanced and counterintuitive, and philosophy has always offered profound alternatives. Just to name a few..
Solution: Physics
Quantum Non-locality & Bell’s Theorem
The Concept: Experimental physics has conclusively proven that local realism is false. Quantum-entangled particles instantly influence one another across any distance, transcending the speed of light.
For Magick: Space and physical separation are structural illusions. Sympathetic magic, remote intent, and the link between a sigil and an external event acquire a direct physical basis.
The Measurement Problem & The Observer Effect
The Concept: In quantum mechanics, a physical system remains in a wave-state of superposition (all potential outcomes simultaneously) until an act of measurement or observation occurs.
For Magick: Focused intent and conscious attention actively collapse reality’s probability waves. Gnosis functions as a method to collapse a superposition of possibilities into a single targeted outcome.
Quantum Contextuality (The Kochen-Specker Theorem)
The Concept: Physical properties of particles do not possess intrinsic, pre-existing values prior to measurement. Their values are generated purely within the context of interaction.
For Magick: The material world is not a fixed, pre-packaged object. Reality actively manifests in response to the context of the operator’s interaction with it.
John Wheeler’s “It from Bit” (Information Physics)
The Concept: Physicist John Wheeler demonstrated that all matter and energy (It) fundamentally stem from binary information (Bit). The cosmos is an information-processing architecture at its core.
For Magick: If physical reality is ultimately code and information, then sigils, rituals, and intent are methods for scripting and executing commands directly within the system.
The Holographic Principle
The Concept: Derived from string theory and black hole thermodynamics, this principle states that our entire three-dimensional reality is a holographic projection of two-dimensional information encoded on the cosmic horizon.
For Magick: The physical realm is a rendered projection rather than the irreducible floor of existence. The fabric of reality is malleable and re-programmable at its source layer.
Solution: Philosophy
Analytic Idealism (Bernardo Kastrup)
The Concept: Consciousness is fundamental. The universe is a single, continuous mental ocean (Mind-at-Large), while physical matter and biological brains are merely the external appearance of localized mental dissociation.
For Magick: Neutralizes the core objection of physicalist skepticism. Your mind is not trapped inside your skull-thought, intent, and external events inhabit the exact same underlying mental medium.
The Interface Theory of Perception (Donald Hoffman)
The Concept: Proven via evolutionary game theory: evolution shaped our senses for survival rather than truth. Space, time, and matter are not objective reality, but a desktop user interface (UI) designed to hide underlying complexity.
For Magick: Magick does not “violate the laws of physics” - it hacks the user interface using shortcuts, hotkeys, and intentional commands (sigils, gnosis, masks).
Object-Oriented Ontology (Graham Harman & Levi Bryant)
The Concept: A flat ontology that rejects human exceptionalism. All entities- humans, corporations, servitors, godforms, and pop-culture archetypes - possess equal ontological status and an autonomous, withdrawn reality.
For Magick: Servitors, godforms, and invoked masks are not “imaginary mental tricks.” They are autonomous non-human objects with genuine agency and real-world causal power.
Speculative Realism & Hyper-Chaos (Quentin Meillassoux)
The Concept: The laws of nature are neither necessary nor eternal. The only true absolute is Contingency (Hyper-Chaos): the laws of physics themselves can shift or break at any moment without cause.
For Magick: A rigorous philosophical foundation for Chaos Magick. The rigid stability of the physical world is merely a temporary, accidental configuration, not an impenetrable wall.
Dual-Aspect Monism (Spinoza, Russell, Pauli-Jung)
The Concept: Mind and matter are neither separate substances nor byproducts of one another. They are two complementary, structural perspectives of a single underlying “neutral” domain.
For Magick: Provides a precise framework for Jungian synchronicity - a meaningful shift within the mental domain naturally correlates with and triggers a corresponding manifestation in the physical domain.
Conclusion
In the end, you can base your magick on any of this theories, because they are proven to be true, based on experimentation and pure logic, which gives a lot of space for your active practice.
